Tricks of the Trade

I  just listed with so we will see if this will assist me in getting links and traffic to this blog. Learning   profitable SEO with the little bit of time I have between work, traveling, and trying to have a life might be a challenge.   It seems FB, Twitter, Utube,  Google Analytics and the rest could end up being a full time job.  I have to learn short cuts to how to drive traffic to this blog, the proper protocol and without an insider in the computer world finding this difficult.   I see why web masters are hired, it really does take full time to properly position yourself on the web.  As with most things, however, I need to experience all of this for myself first.   I don’t know much about Seededbuzz, so if you are out there in cyberspace reading this and have any information or experience, please pass it on.  I am all a buzz with anticipation.

As  far as the blog, I have decided to have Tom write his Tips and Tricks for House/Home Maintenance   in a monthly format for easy searching . This way you can go to the month of year  or by category.  Seems logical and easy.   Here are some  recent photos of  Tom’s and my  current work.  He repaired an old antique clock frame in mahogany with a beaded trim piece he made to match and stained.   If you need small repairs on furniture, Tom Scott Interior Contractors can get your treasured items back in wood working order.

His Tips and Tricks for Fall 2010 is in process and will get posted as soon as complete, please check back soon.

SEO is a term most web designer’s know, but for the small business person like me it’s a conundrum of rules and regs dictated by Google and some by Yahoo that seems overwhelming to understand. I asked my webmaster, Barbara Weibel, at Holeinthedonut.com what is all means and she explained the Blog is the number one driver and getting incoming links into your site is KEY to high page rankings by Google. The demi GOD of the internet.

With a little searching, I final found an article that explains some of this techno garble to this right brained interior designer in a language I can understand. I thought it might be beneficial to share this with anyone that might stumble across my BLOG. Hopefully, other designers will find this and want to link into my page. Here is another article I found, (wow! there are so many when you start looking) of the 100 best SEO blogsthat I hope will help you to learn a little more of this mysterious world of the internet traffic flow and how to get it to your website.

By the way SEO stands for SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION

I prefer Benjamin Moore Paint over others, especially the patented AURA series.  Here is an article Ben Moore just sent me that I found of interest.

For authentic Benjamin Moore colors, insist on Benjamin Moore paint http://www.benjaminmoore.com/

Authentic Benjamin Moore colors are only available at your local Benjamin Moore retailer.

Mismatched colors are often not evident until the paint is on the walls, and the results can be disappointing for your clients. Competitors may claim they can match Benjamin Moore colors, but the truth is that they can’t.

You can only get true Benjamin Moore colors using Benjamin Moore paint. The reason lies in our manufacturing process. Our paints are created using proprietary colorants and resins and formulated with our patented waterborne technologies. This highly controlled system ensures the quality of Benjamin Moore paints and the purity of our colors.

When another store offers to match a Benjamin Moore color, their scanner simply provides its “best guess” for matching the color using another paint, generic colorants and a different tinting system. While it may be close, the final result is not the color you recommended to your client. In other words, it’s a knockoff.

Be sure that the color you envisioned is the color you get.

While the weather is cold outside, now is the time to go through the house and clear the clutter that has built up in your home.  An organized, less cluttered home is so much more enjoyable.  Organize closets, drawers, and cabinets.  Recycle, or give away items you no longer use.  You can even give items away to others who need it on a website called, Freecycle.com. Remember “one mans junk is another man’s treasure.”

To remove an old light bulb that has broken off in the socket simply turn off the power to the fixture or unplug the lamp. Take the new light bulb and screw it into the socket counterclockwise using firm but gentle pressure. The old bulb base will come right out of the socket. Remember it has broken glass around the edges so handle with care. Now install your new bulb.

A light touch of petroleum jelly on the door latch and strike plate once a year lets the door close smoothly.  A dry latch will hit against the strike plate possibly bumping it out of alignment and preventing the door from closing properly.  This applies mostly to exterior doors but any door could use it.

With all the rain we have been getting this year be sure to keep the gutters and downspouts clean of leaves and branches.  Water pouring close to the foundation of your home can cause basement leaks and erosion.

Garage door openers come with a pre-set code from the factory. If the code is not changed during installation anyone can open your garage door with any new garage door opener. Some openers have an automatic code change each time the door is used but if yours is not this type I recommend the code be checked right away. To change the code remove the cover from the garage door opener motor and locate a little bar with tiny switches with numbers above them, usually 14 to 16 numbers. You can use a paper clip to move the switches up or down at each number. Now open your hand held remote controller for the door and move those switches to match the ones you just moved on the main unit. Replace the cover and that’s it. You can call me for additional information if needed.

If your refrigerator has the motor underneath as most do, check for dust build up on the wire cooling grill behind the toe kick vent.  The vent snaps off and you can see underneath with a flashlight if dust or pet hair has stuck under there.  Remove the obstruction with a crevice tool on any vacuum cleaner.  A clogged cooling grill will cause the refrigerator to run longer and cost more on your electric bill.  It also can cause the compressor to burn out prematurely.

When you leave the house be sure your ceiling fans are not left on the “Low” fan speed.  If there is a power outage the fan may not be able to restart from the low position.  They are designed to start on “Hi” and be adjusted lower.  We actually had one of our ceiling fans do just that and the smell of electrical wire overheating woke the dog who woke us.  We called our local fire department who discovered what the problem was.
